The Earthworm Farm Project at MC Weiler Primary School
Supported by HSBC, the Earthworm Farm project has offered bank volunteers an opportunity to address the needs of the school, and the community, while providing environmental learning within the school through the Eco-Schools framework. The teams of volunteers and learners constructed a 2m x 3m home for over 5,000 composting worms, which produce organic fertilizer for the vegetable gardens at the school. Fresh vegetables are grown here to supplement the school's food stocks. Using the Earthworm Farm also means there is less waste sent to landfill sites, which in turn contributes to a reduction in methane gases emitted in to the atmosphere - a major contributor to climate change.
Possible learning opportunities arising from this project may include natural science lessons on biology and biodiversity, maths lessons (calculating the exponential growth rate of the earthworms) and the development of various skills learnt through the construction and maintenance of the farm and the use of the compost in the gardens.
